Na een maandenlange transfersoap speelt Steven Bergwijn eindelijk in het shirt van Ajax. En dat doet bondscoach Louis van Gaal deugd. Hij gaf de aanvaller het laatste zetje om voor de Amsterdammers te kiezen.<\/h4>\n

“Hier heb ik anderhalf jaar naar uitgekeken”, zegt Bergwijn in gesprek met De Telegraaf. De 24-jarige aanvaller is weg bij Tottenham Hotspur en begint aan een nieuw avontuur. “Ik ben blij dat alles achter de rug is en ik van de onzekerheid af ben. Nu heb ik rust in mijn hoofd.” Hoewel het lang duurde tot beide clubs tot een akkoord kwamen, raakte het geduld van Bergwijn niet op. “Ik ben altijd blijven openstaan voor Ajax, omdat dit voor mij de beste keuze is.”<\/p>\n

Zijn overstap ligt, gezien zijn PSV-verleden, gevoelig. “Ik begrijp de rivaliteit tussen de fans. Maar ik zie Ajax gewoon als een nieuwe, mooie stap in mijn carri\u00e8re. En bij PSV ben ik als voetballer groot geworden. Daar ben ik de club heel dankbaar voor”, aldus Bergwijn, die Van Gaal om vaderlijke raad vroeg. “De bondscoach vindt me bij Ajax passen en denkt dat het goed is dat ik me weer in Nederland kan laten zien. Meneer Van Gaal en ik zijn elkaar dankbaar. ”<\/p>\n

Richting het WK hoopt Bergwijn zelfvertrouwen te tanken en in een vast wedstrijdritme te komen, iets wat ontbrak bij Spurs. “Fysiek is het moeilijk om op een WK drie wedstrijden in de week in actie te komen als je daarvoor bij je club te weinig minuten hebt gemaakt. Hoe verder je in het toernooi komt, des te meer zich dat gaat wreken. Daarom was een transfer \u00e9cht noodzakelijk.
